5 Destination Wedding Trends for 2020
We’ve been working with amazing wedding couples on their destination wedding plans for well over a decade now. Some things have stayed tried and true as far as our couple’s wedding away wish list. Trends are changing though in regards to what a destination wedding looks like to our new 202 wedding couples. Let’s look at what couples still traditionally love about planning a destination wedding. And what the new trends are in what they are presently seeking in their ultimate dream destination wedding plans.
1. To Beach or Not to Beach
It used to be that couples incapsulated their destination wedding in around a tropical, sunny beach wedding. The main thought was if we are going somewhere tropical, then we are going to enjoy a toe in the sand wedding ceremony. It’s not to say this is still not at the forefront of many of our couple’s wedding wishes, but it’s not at the top of the list anymore. It’s now become more of what feels special to a couple in regards to their wedding ceremony and reception vision.

One of my very favourite reception options is none other than Beach Palace Cancun with a rooftop Sky Terrace ceremony and reception. Complete privacy, incredible ocean and lagoon views, your private pool and bar and much, much more.
2. Traditional vs Unique and Upcoming Wedding Ceremonies
Not to say that having your destination wedding in a chapel is not as magical as a more non-traditional approach to your wedding vows. Chapel locations such as the beautiful, mountaintop, oceanview chapel at Grand Palladium Vallarta or even the glass-encased oceanview chapel at Panama Jacks Cancun are to die for. However, there are some amazing trends in new ceremony approaches such as Mayan Culture-infused wedding ceremony.
Resorts such as the magnificent Grand Velas Riviera Maya offer such a ceremony. Featuring a sacred blessing from a Shaman, Mayan song all within an ocean ritual that will leave your guests breathless with wonder and your wedding vows wonderfully etched forever in their minds.
3. Where in the World Will We Wed
Was it a recent vacation our couples may have gotten engaged at. Or even a destination their parents may love. Many Millenials have also travelled to many of their friend’s destination weddings and now want something a little different for their nuptials. Areas such as Costa Rica are coming up more and more as a destination wedding place of interest. Our South-Asian Destination wedding couples also have fabulous options in Costa Rica.
Los Cabos is very upscale, offering a plethora of new five star resorts all within a desert oasis. One in particular that makes it to the top of my resort list: The stunningly beautiful and authentically inspiring Le Blanc Los Cabos.

Huatulco often gets overlooked when couples want an area outside of the touristy areas of Cancun and Riviera Maya. Dreams Huatulco gets my two thumbs up as far as a five star, affordable resort choice perfectly situated in one of the most authentically beautiful areas of Mexico.
So there you have it, some new and exciting trends in 2020 destination weddings. It still is all about all the great things that come with a destination wedding over a traditional at-home wedding—getting together for a whirlwind four to seven nights in a fun-filled tropical destination. Whether beautiful and conventional or fun and unique, our new Millenials are all about their vision of what will make their wedding ever so magical and memorable.
