{Wedding Dates and Venues}
When you connect with venues, the first thing they ask is what date(s) you’re interested in because the first thing they’ll do is check whether the property is available on that date(s). If it is, then the conversation can go further. If not, then it’s in your and their best interest to move on. So we wanted to provide you with tools that could impact your wedding dates.
{Wedding Muhurat and Venues}
Also, here is a muhurat calculator. In addition to holidays, the muhurat is important to many people. The muhurat not only influences wedding dates but also the time of the marriage. Indian weddings in the US (anywhere outside India) can get tricky when it comes to muhurats. First of all, most Indian weddings are on the weekend – particularly Saturdays. So what if your muhurat falls on a Monday, Thursday or other weekday?
Many couples choose to have a civil marriage or a religious ceremony at the time of the muhurat and save the big celebration for the wedding weekend.
What about the muhurat time? Similar to the muhurat dates, navigating ‘odd’ muhurat times can be tricky. Most venues won’t let allow a wedding ceremony at ‘odd’ times, such as early morning or late at night. For example, a hotel or resort can’t allow a baraat at 7am – as it will cause too much disruption to the other guests staying there. Additionally there are labor laws and union policies that venues must abide by.
Most venues have predetermined ceremony and reception times that are sold in blocks of 4 to 6 hours of actual event time per event. You get additional time for setup and teardown. Every venue is different and you should always understand the specific policies of your venue, but in general, venues sell event space in blocks of 4 to 6 hours per event.
{Indian Weddings and Venue Time Blocks}
For most Indian weddings 4-5 hours for the ceremony and 6 hours for the reception is sufficient for a baraat + ceremony + post ceremony photos + lunch + cocktail hour + reception. If you’re skeptical, remember that lunch is usually served in a different space than where the ceremony is. The ceremony will take place in a garden, lawn, ballroom, or other venue. Whereas lunch will be in a {different} ballroom or other outdoor space.
If your wedding starts with the baraat at 10am, followed by lunch starting at 1pm, then you can assume lunch will conclude around 2:30pm. And the rest of the celebration picks up again with cocktail hour starting around 6pm or 6:30pm through the reception, with an end time of midnight.
Some venues will let you keep the party going passed midnight without additional fees and be flexible with timing if your event runs later than expected. That’s something to discuss with the venue while negotiating. But as you can see, the 4 to 6 hour blocks of time are great for Indian weddings.
